Enfield woman shows why age is no barrier to volunteering

At 85 years young, Marcia Mynett is proving that age is no barrier to technology, volunteering and making a difference in her community.

As the IT administration volunteer at Ordnance Pantry, she manages email enquiries, promotes activities and fundraising events on social media, and is now helping to develop the pantry’s website alongside one of its youngest volunteers, aged just 16.

Ordnance Pantry supports more than 30 local families every Saturday at Ordnance Methodist Church, Enfield Lock, providing over £25 worth of groceries for just £4.50 a week. The pantry also runs a community café, offering a hot meal, tea and often a slice of cake for just £1.

Dawn, the pantry co-ordinator, said: “Our volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Marcia plays a vital role in helping us to manage our emails and social media enquiries.”

Explaining her love of volunteering, Marcia said: “At my age, a lot of my friends have passed away and it can be very isolating, especially with limited mobility. Being a volunteer at the pantry, supporting the emails and digital promotion, keeps me involved with my community and allows me to make a difference.”

Ordnance Pantry is holding a tabletop sale fundraiser on Saturday (12th), from 11am to 2pm, at Ordnance Methodist Church (EN3 6BW). There will be new and pre-loved items including household goods, toys, books, clothes and more. There will also be a £1-plus table, where items are just £1 or £2, as well as a tombola and other fundraising activities.

Funds raised will help the pantry continue supporting local families. Residents are invited to come along, grab a bargain, enjoy refreshments and find out more about becoming a pantry member.
