The Metropolitan Police unit covering Enfield and Haringey has issued a statement following yesterday’s antisemitic attack – confirming there will be an “increased police presence” across North London.

Two Jewish people were stabbed on Wednesday (30th) in Golders Green, an area with one of the highest Jewish populations in the UK. The attack is being treated as a terrorist incident.

It follows a number of other antisemitic incidents in recent weeks, including an arson attack against a Jewish charity, also in Golders Green, and an attempted arson on a synagogue in Finchley.

North London is home to tens of thousands of Jewish people, with other population centres including Stamford Hill, Tottenham and Southgate.

In a statement issued this morning (Thursday 30th) Inspector Asad Ikram, from the Met’s north area command unit covering Enfield and Haringey, said: “Following yesterday’s tragic incident in Golders Green, we understand the concern this will cause across our communities. Our thoughts remain with the victims and all those affected.

“The Metropolitan Police Service has confirmed this has been declared a terrorist incident, and a man has been arrested. Two people who were injured are being treated in hospital and are in a stable condition.

“We want to reassure residents across Haringey/Enfield that there is no intelligence to suggest any wider, ongoing threat at this time. However, as a precaution and to provide reassurance, there will be an increased police presence across the borough, particularly around faith venues and community locations.

“You will see local neighbourhood officers carrying out high-visibility patrols and engaging with community leaders and faith groups. We are working closely with partners to ensure everyone feels safe and supported.

“We encourage anyone with concerns to speak with officers on patrol, and to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to police.

“Our communities are strongest when we stand together. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.”

Two men – aged 76 and 34 – were treated at the scene of yesterday’s Golders Green for stab wounds. Both men were taken to hospital, where they remain in a stable condition.

A 45-year-old man, a British national born in Somalia, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. He was initially taken to hospital but has since been discharged and has been taken to a London police station where he remains in police custody.

Detectives are keen to hear from anyone who may have information about this incident that could assist the investigation. Anyone with information can call police, in confidence, on 0800 555 111, or report it via www.gov.uk/ACT.
