A London charity is asking for help from Enfield residents as it aims to plant more native hedgerows around the capital.

CPRE London wants to plant hedgerows across London for the next planting season, between November and March, with the aim of boosting biodiversity and wildlife.

The Enfield Society has given the charity funding to get more hedgerows planted in Enfield specifically and CPRE London now wants to hear from the people of Enfield about where they would like to have hedgerows planted.

Hedgerows aren’t just a way to help make a green space look greener and more vibrant. In a 2015 study of a 40-metre hedge, a UK ecologist found over 2,000 different species. This is because hedgerows work both as a physical home and a complementary habitat for creatures like dormice, hedgehogs and bats. They’re also places that animals can nest in the long-term and provide temporary food and shelter to other animals when necessary.

In an increasingly urban world, hedgerows are one of the best ways to ensure that biodiversity and nature still thrive. The Independent Climate Change Committee target is to plant or restore 120,000 miles of hedgerow in Britain by 2050, which means over 4,000 miles of new and restored hedgerows per year.

CPRE London can help to find volunteers for hedgerow planting through social media or corporate volunteering, and also has resources to help train local group leaders in long-term hedgerow maintenance.
