New crossing offers 'major improvement' for pedestrians in Edmonton

Local politicians and campaigners spent years calling for a safe route across Sterling Way near Silver Street Station

The installation of a new pedestrian crossing in Edmonton has been welcomed as a “major improvement” for road safety.

Sterling Way, a road adjoining the North Circular near Silver Street Station, had for years been cited as a dangerous spot for pedestrians because of the lack of safe crossing points – exacerbated by people dashing across traffic to catch their train.

Because the road is managed by Transport for London (TfL), however, councillors had to repeatedly lobby City Hall for improvements to be made.

Funding for a Pelican crossing was finally secured two years ago when the nearby Joyce Avenue and Snells Park estates redevelopment was granted planning approval.

TfL began work at Sterling Way this summer and, last week, the crossing finally opened.

Former council leader Ergin Erbil, who continues to lead the Labour group and serve Edmonton Green ward, said: “This new crossing is a major improvement for our community and something we’ve been campaigning for over many years.

“Thanks to Labour government investment, working with the Labour mayor, and local Labour councillors, we’ve been able to make this long-awaited project a reality.

“The crossing will make it much safer for school children, commuters using Silver Street Station, patients visiting North Mid Hospital, and local businesses. It’s a clear example of what investment in local neighbourhoods can achieve.

“To those who say this will create more traffic, I’ve lived in Edmonton all my life, and this junction has always had its fair share of traffic. The difference now is that people will be able to cross it safely. I’m grateful to everyone who worked alongside us to make this happen, and I hope residents will enjoy the benefits for many years to come.”
