The owner of a supermarket in Ponders End has been fined for breaching food safety regulations following an investigation by Enfield Council.

Routine food hygiene inspections by the council’s environmental health food safety team on three occasions last year found a rat infestation, chewed food by rodents, a dead rat and unclean premises.

At Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on 12th September, Nue Innovations Limited, which owns and operates Nue Supermarket at 282 Ponders End, as well as director Nnambi Ugochukwu Ekwem of Waltham Cross, pleaded guilty to food hygiene and pest control offences.

The offences that led to the prosecution relate to pests on the premises, poor cleaning to equipment and premises, food not protected from contamination and not having adequate procedures to control pests, all contrary to food and hygiene regulations.

The company and its director were ordered to pay total costs of £4,026 and fined £938, while Ekwem also received a six-month conditional discharge.

The supermarket voluntarily closed following the three visits by inspectors last year.
