Enfield residents are being encouraged to check if they are registered to vote ahead of polling day on Thursday, 7th May.

On Thursday, 7th May, eligible residents will be able to vote in the local election but must register in advance if they are not already included on the borough’s electoral register.

Registration takes approximately five minutes and can be made online at the government’s website at gov.uk. The deadline to register to vote is Monday, 20th April at 11.59pm.

Once registration is complete, the resident will receive confirmation from the council’s electoral services team that they have been added to the electoral register and are entitled to vote.

Voters can cast their ballot in person at a polling station, by post in advance of polling day, or by appointing a trusted individual to vote on their behalf through a proxy vote. The deadline to apply for a proxy is Tuesday, 28th April.

If voting by post, photo ID is not required, but anyone voting on the day itself will need to bring a valid form of ID with them to the polling station. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Tuesday, 21st April, but residents must have registered to vote before requesting a postal vote.

This year’s election is set to be unprecedented in terms of the number and range of candidates standing, with six parties expected to stand candidates in all 25 of Enfield’s wards. In total, 63 seats are up for grabs.

Labour will be looking to win a record fifth term at Enfield Civic Centre, while the Conservatives have hopes of regaining power locally for the first time since 2010.

Perry Scott, the council’s chief executive and returning officer, said: “We want to ensure as many eligible residents are able to vote either in person or by post, so I would advise those who have moved into the borough recently or who are not currently on the electoral register to act now, and ensure their voice is heard at the ballot box.

“The process has never been simpler as all resources are available online. Our electoral services team are also available to answer any questions on the phone or by email.

“If you vote at your local polling station in person, it is essential to produce valid photo ID. I would advise you to familiarise yourself with the accepted types of ID sooner rather than later.”

The law requires every resident casting their vote at a polling station, including a proxy voter, to present physical photo identification. A picture or copy of ID on a mobile phone or tablet device will not be accepted unless it an approved digital form of identification which is either a veterans’ card or evisa.

If residents do not have valid photo ID, a free voter authority certificate can be obtained from the council’s electoral services team. The deadline to apply is 5pm on Tuesday, 28th April .
