A road has been closed and buses diverted after a sinkhole opened up in Cockfosters this afternoon (Monday 12th).

The hole in Cockfosters Road, near Car Hill Roundabout, was reported around lunchtime and led to the closure of the road as a safety precaution.

Buse routes 298 and 299 are both now on diversion and major traffic disruption is expected to last for several hours and possibly days while work continues to fix the problem.

The cause of the sinkhole has not yet been established.

An Enfield Council spokesperson said: “A hole has been reported on the carriageway (Cockfosters Road). Council officers have been on site and a temporary traffic management order will be put in place.

“We are trying to establish what appropriate measures are needed, what has caused the hole to appear and we are liaising with other partners to determine best course of action.”
