Colourful map illustrations now adorn the platforms of an Enfield railway station thanks to local volunteers.

As part of the ‘station partners’ improvement scheme sponsored by publicly-owned rail operator Govia Thameslink Railway, which runs the Great Northern route along the Hertford Loop Line, the murals were recently installed on the platforms of Winchmore Hill Station.

Two years ago, Winchmore Hill Station became the latest to join the station partners scheme, with a group of volunteers now helping to brighten up its platforms. The partnerships have been running for over a decade and encourage residents to help enhance the appearance of their local railway station.

Volunteers with the scheme recently commissioned illustrator Holly Francesca, a former resident of Winchmore Hill who now lives and works in Portugal, to tailor one of her cartographic artworks for the station.

She had previously promoted her work at the Fancy Fair in Winchmore Hill in 2017 and updated an existing illustration to include recent additions such as the Little Green Dragon Pub.

Neil Littman, from Winchmore Hill Residents’ Association, is involved with the station partners scheme. Explaining the idea behind the local maps, he said: “I commissioned the panels because of remembering Holly’s work from when I was involved with the promotion of the Fancy Fair.

“We used an existing illustration, added some more local points of interest and adapted it for the station.”

The panels measure 1.3metres by 1m and are printed on Dibond and aluminium substrate.

The murals are part of an ongoing programme of improvements to brighten up the station and make commuting a more pleasant experience for the local community.

Neil added: “A friend told me he saw a small crowd standing round one of the panels the other day, so it must have worked!”
