Disruption to train services across North London amid IT outage

Some Great Northern and Thameslink trains are being cancelled after a global IT software failure

Global problems with IT systems caused by a cybersecurity company’s botched software update are causing train cancellations on some North London routes today (Friday 19th).

Great Northern and Thameslink services through Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, which are both part of Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), have been affected since early this morning with around half of services being cancelled.

London Overground and London Underground both appear to be unaffected, and while Greater Anglia says some of its stations are affected there were no signs of trains being delayed on its West Anglia route through Tottenham and eastern Enfield.

GTR said in a statement: “We are currently experiencing widespread IT issues across our entire network. Our IT teams are actively investigating to determine the root cause of the problem.

“We are unable to access driver diagrams at certain locations, leading to potential short-notice cancellations, particularly on the Thameslink and Great Northern networks. Additionally, other key systems, including our real-time customer information platforms, are also affected.

“We will provide additional updates when we can. In the meantime, please regularly check your journey before you travel.”

Greater Anglia said in its statement: “We are aware of the mass IT outage. Some of our stations are affected by this and it is being investigated with high importance. Station staff will be aware and able to assist. If you have any questions we are happy to help. As soon as we have an update we will inform you.”

Meanwhile, the NHS has also been disrupted. But in a statement, North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust said: “We’re investigating the impact of the global IT outage on our systems here at North Mid. At present majority of our systems and services are running normally.”
