A professional wrestler who began her career in Enfield is set to fight for a world title tonight (Sunday 25th) at Wembley Stadium – and has vowed to “end the career” of her opponent.

Mariah May’s incredible rise through the ranks began with a WWE try-out at the company’s Enfield-based UK Performance Center in 2019, after impressing with an Edmonton-based independent wrestling promotion. Although she didn’t end up signing with WWE, it began her journey towards success.

“It was super early in my career and I decided to look at my options,” Mariah told the Dispatch. “The advice I got was to travel all over Europe, but then I got an opportunity to move to Japan on a whim and I stayed there for a while because they have the best women’s wrestling in the world.”

Maria’s exposure in Japan eventually led to a conversation last year with Tony Khan, owner of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), who is also famous in the UK for being the owner of Fulham FC.

Khan was so impressed that Mariah soon signed and made her debut for the company, which broadcasts weekly shows in the UK via ITV, last November.

“I didn’t see it coming, in my eyes I was still quite new, but I was thrilled because I love AEW and my end goal was always to move to America and earn an established income as a wrestler.”

Just nine months later, she is the contender for Toni Storm’s AEW Women’s World Championship and will be fighting for the title at AEW’s All In London show at Wembley Stadium.

While it might be seen as a homecoming and a chance for a moment of glory in front of her family and friends, Mariah is focused solely on her opponent, who she viciously attacked on AEW Dynamite a number of weeks ago in a shocking turn.

“I wanted to be just like Toni Storm, I looked up to her, but now it has gone full circle because I will end her career at Wembley Stadium.

“I never wanted to be her friend, once I realised how to get ahead in this business, I wanted to be close to her so I could learn from her and then use mental warfare and get in her head so I could beat her.”

All In London is available to watch on pay-per-view television from 6pm tonight.
