Fresh consultation on second ‘quieter neighbourhood’ in Bowes Park

Changes have been made since the original plans were first revealed in 2023, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

Enfield Council has opened a statutory consultation on changes to a second proposed low-traffic neighbourhood (LTN) in Bowes Park.

Residents, businesses, and any other interested stakeholders have until Sunday, 20th October to complete a survey on the proposed changes to the the ‘Bowes East Quieter Neighbourhood’ scheme. They can also attend scheduled drop-in sessions and a webinar.

Following early feedback in late 2023, a design for the Bowes East LTN was put forward and, earlier this year, comments on the proposed design were sought.

A new ‘school street’ in Grenoble Gardens and Tottenhall Road has now been proposed. The council says this would improve air quality and safety during pick-up and drop-off times around St Michael-at-Bowes School and Tottenhall School. Feedback showed this proposal had support from “some residents”.

Right-turns westbound on Grenoble Gardens will be introduced for afternoon peaks from 4pm until 7pm on an experimental basis “to reduce queues and improve safety in the area”.

Earlier reviews of traffic data showed “large vehicle queue lengths” were evident in Grenoble Gardens “especially during peak afternoon hours”.

A speed cushion will be put in at Melville Gardens, an area described as having “excessive through traffic”. The street will also be “greened” with grass, trees and plants in St Cuthberts Road, plus the southern end of Fairbrook Road next to the closure at Grenoble Gardens.

Bowes East LTN encompasses Hereward Gardens, Princes Avenue, Tottenhall Road, Grenoble Gardens, Upsdell Avenue, Berkshire Gardens, Fairbrook Road and St Cuthberts Road.

The area sits east of Green Lanes and south of the North Circular, not far from the existing ‘Bowes Primary Area’ LTN the council installed in 2020 and made permanent in 2022.

A webinar will be held on Wednesday, 2nd October at 6pm while the first drop-in session will be held on Tuesday, 8th October from 4pm until 6pm at St Michael-at-Bowes Church of England Junior School.

A second drop-in session will be held at the same venue on Saturday 12th, October from 10am until 12pm.
