An Edmonton church has launched a mammoth £2million fundraising campaign for a new building that will provide a range of community uses.

Edmonton Methodist Church plans to rebuild its existing church in Fore Street to create a “highly versatile place of worship” which supports a wider mix of community uses; from youth facilities to food aid support.

The new church building is set to include a hall to feed the homeless in the local community, a recording studio for local musicians, a large sports hall for youth activities such as basketball and climbing walls, and will also have the capacity to hold functions such as lectures, recitals, workshops and training sessions for local people. The new building could even be used for film screenings.

Reverend Valentin Dedji, minister at Edmonton Methodist Church, has pledged to walk two million steps to help raise the £2m needed. He said: “Alongside improved community facilities, we’ll be able to extend our outreach, become more responsive to local needs and give local people a place, at the heart of their community, to come together, while retaining the core function of the church.”

A fundraising campaign was launched earlier this month and was backed by Enfield Council’s deputy leader Ergin Erbil, who said: “Edmonton Methodist Church are developing their wonderful church and premises in the heart of Edmonton Green.

“The current building is no longer fit for purpose and the new facilities will further support the local community. Inflation costs and the chaotic economy have meant that the church are depending on the community for donations.

“Edmonton Methodist Church play such an important role in our community with foodbanks, vital support to vulnerable families, and charitable work.”
