Carol and Ron Beckwith will receive a joint British Citizen Award thanks to their work over 40 years helping to lead troops at the 14th Enfield Scouts

Two longstanding volunteers with an Enfield scouts group are set to be honoured with a prestigious national award.
Carol and Ron Beckwith, who have both dedicated more than 40 years to the 14th Enfield Scouts in Freezywater, have been selected to receive a joint British Citizen Award (BCA).
Often referred to as “the people’s honours” the award recognises exceptional individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to their communities through dedication, compassion and selfless service.
Carol has spent more than 43 years leading and supporting the beavers troop at 14th Enfield, which is the youngest age group for scouts, while Ron has devoted over 40 years to leading the scout group.
Together, they have attended countless evening sessions, weekend camps, expeditions and community events to “help thousands of young people develop confidence, resilience, leadership skills and a lifelong sense of belonging”.
It is estimated that well over 2,000 young people have passed through beavers and scouts during Carol and Ron’s years of service.
Reacting to their award win, Carol said: “Myself and Ron are absolutely thrilled and incredibly honoured to have been chosen for this award.”
Carol and Ron’s influence has helped shape generations of local children, many of whom have gone on to become active and valued members of the community.
Beyond the scouting movement, for more than 50 years, Carol and Ron have also volunteered at Freezywater St George’s Primary School, supporting pupils and staff. Even at the age of 80, they continue to volunteer within the school and remain active members of their local church community, helping with everything from maintaining the memorial gardens to supporting community events.
The pair will shortly receive their British Citizen Award medals at a ceremony held at the Palace of Westminster. Hosted by television presenter Matt Allwright, the ceremony will see them formally recognised and entered into the British Citizen Award roll of honour before taking part in a traditional open-top bus ‘lap of honour’ through London to celebrate alongside fellow recipients.
