Sandrene Daniel-Joel, director of Feed My Sheep Outreach UK, on how the Edmonton foodbank is making a difference locally

With current inflation, heating costs, and the upcoming winter season, we want to raise awareness of what we do for local people in needy circumstances.
Our vital local foodbank is run entirely by church members and local residents. This month we are celebrating a major milestone, having supported hundreds of individuals and families across the community since we first opened our doors in 2021.
We operate exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays. The foodbank provides an essential weekend safety-net for working families, elderly residents, and individuals who struggle to access weekday services.
Our grassroots initiative is powered by a dedicated team of volunteers drawn directly from the congregation at a local church (Global Miracle Gospel Ministries) as well as the wider neighbourhood, with everyone giving up their weekends to sort, pack, and distribute provisions.
The foodbank’s consistent weekend service is made through a vital weekly supply chain. Every week, the group receives a direct delivery of fresh surplus food and ambient grocery staples from a well-known national food redistribution charity, ensuring the shelves remain stocked for the weekend openings.
Over the last five years, numerous local people have benefited greatly from this collaborative community effort. With the ongoing high cost of living, the weekend sessions have become more critical than ever to ensure no resident goes hungry.
When we started back in 2021 during the Covid-19 pandemic, we wanted to create a welcoming space where anyone experiencing hardship could get help without judgement. Seeing how many people have benefited greatly over the years is incredibly rewarding.
We are so grateful to our partner charity for the weekly food supplies, and to our amazing church and community volunteers who show up every Saturday and Sunday to make this happen.
While we have operated a reliable supply chain for years, the sheer volume and demographic of the people turning to our weekly distribution has drastically shifted. More working families and individuals are walking through our doors than ever before.
Local residents interested in joining the volunteer roster can drop by during weekend hours (4pm-5pm every Saturday, 12pm-2pm on Sundays) or contact us using the details below.
