A news service for blind and visually impaired people in Enfield is inviting local residents to help celebrate its 65th anniversary next month.

The Enfield Talking Newspaper, believed to be the longest-running talking newspaper in the United Kingdom, is celebrating its 65th anniversary, marking more than six decades of providing accessible local news and information to blind, partially sighted and print-disabled people.

Founded in 1961, The Enfield Talking Newspaper has been a “pioneering force” in accessible communication, ensuring that local residents with sight loss remain informed, connected and engaged with community life.

The anniversary celebration at Forty Hall Estate on Saturday, 12th September will bring together listeners, volunteers, local dignitaries, community organisations and supporters to recognise the achievements of the charity and the contribution it has made to the lives of people affected by sight loss.

Dem Demetriou, acting secretary of The Enfield Talking Newspaper, said: “We are immensely proud to celebrate 65 years of service to the blind and partially sighted community. Thousands of volunteers, listeners and supporters have contributed to our success over the years.

“While technology has transformed how information is delivered, the importance of accessible local news and human connection remains as vital as ever.”

Over the past 65 years, the organisation has evolved through multiple generations of technology, from reel-to-reel recordings and cassette tapes to today’s digital delivery methods. Throughout this period, its mission has remained unchanged: to provide reliable and accessible local news to people who might otherwise be excluded from mainstream information sources.

For many listeners, The Enfield Talking Newspaper has provided far more than news, offering “companionship, a connection with local events, and a valuable link to community life”.

The service continues to play an important role in reducing social isolation and promoting independence among blind and partially sighted residents.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the organisation will reflect on its rich history while also looking ahead to the future of accessible information services and the continuing importance of talking newspapers in an increasingly digital world.

The event takes place within the Orangery Conservatory at Forty Hall (EN2 9HA) from 3pm to 5.30pm on Saturday, 12th September.
