Council consulting on extension to public space protection orders

The PSPOs include controls on alcohol consumption, car cruising, dog controls, “intimidatory begging” and riding mopeds to “cause alarm”, reports Grace Howarth, Local Democracy Reporter

A public space protection order (PSPO) notice

A consultation on new public space protection orders (PSPOs) has been launched.

Enfield Council wants to renew its PSPOs which “deal with particular nuisances or problems in a defined area that are considered to be detrimental to the local community’s quality of life”.

There are currently 15 orders being proposed, including controls on alcohol consumption, car cruising, dog controls, “intimidatory begging” and riding mopeds to “cause alarm”.

Residents have until Sunday, 31st August to respond to the consultation.

Not all the PSPOs are borough-wide, with some only relating to parks and open spaces and others council estates and associated land.

Under the plans a police officer, community support officer or council officer would have the authority to ask people to halt carrying out any of the 15 listed orders which, if found in breach, could result in a fine of between £100 and £1,000.

The council is also seeking to know if it should introduce additional PSPOs giving “Illegal gatherings” and “unlicensed music events” as examples.

The survey asks residents which of the behaviours are a problem in their area and to what extent each behaviour has become “better or worse in the last three years” with three years being the length of time PSPOs are usually in place.
