A literacy festival celebrating authors of black heritage is being hosted at Dugdale Arts Centre next month.
As part of its Black History Month programme this year, Enfield Caribbean Association (ECA) has teamed up with Afiwi Book Club to organise the Black Literature Festival, taking place on Sunday, 18th October.
The festival will include guest speakers, panel discussions, writers’ workshops, bookstalls, book swap, and Windrush stories.
Explaining the idea behind the event, Joy Donaldson, founder of Afiwi Book Club, said: “We are planning a memorable and immersive festival to showcase dynamic national and local black authors alongside local book clubs.
“The schedule features thought-provoking panel discussions and engaging workshops exploring both black history and contemporary themes, as well as a writing competition for young people under 25.
“This is an event not to be missed, so come along to be inspired.”
Author panels begin at 2.20pm and feature Dele Ogun, Pam Edwards, Troy Onyango, Leroy Logan MBE and more. Three workshops, beginning from 1.15pm, will explore writing for the web, creative writing, and writing for children.
Oveta McInnis, ECA chair, added: “The festival is an exciting opportunity for the community to come together to explore Black literature—to learn, and have fun. With workshops, book swaps and panel discussions, it will be a truly interactive day, giving attendees plenty of opportunities to engage with writers and creatives. Anyone interested in literature should not miss this event.”
Delicious Caribbean food and refreshments will also be on sale and available throughout the day.
Tickets are £10 for entry to the entire festival, running from 1pm-7pm, including all workshops and panel discussions, while £5 tickets can be purchased for specific workshops only.
ECA is a charity established in 1986 to work to eliminate racial discrimination and to create an “inclusive, fair and equal community”.
Afiwi Book Club is a non-profit organisation established in 2001 to provide a supportive environment where African and Caribbean heritage women and supporters come together to “discuss books, exchange ideas, and celebrate diverse voices”.
