Q&A with local filmmaker

Talkies Community Cinema is hosting a special event with an award-winning filmmaker from Edmonton

Exodus by Serkan Nihat is described as a “gripping drama that masterfully balances political urgency with deeply humane storytelling”

An Enfield filmmaker will introduce his debut feature film Exodus as part of the autumn season of Talkies Community Cinema.

Serkan Nihat, who grew up in Edmonton and still lives in the borough, has enjoyed a long career in film and television, working as an editor on productions including Spooks, Broadchurch, Call the Midwife, Law & Order UK and Taboo.

He subsequently moved into directing, making award-winning commercials and short films before embarking on his first feature.

Exodus is a powerful human story about displacement, following people forced to leave their homes in Turkey and undertake dangerous journeys in search of safety and a better future.

Inspired by real events, the film explores themes of family, loss, resilience and hope, focusing on the human stories behind the headlines.

The Talkies screening will be followed by a live Q&A with Nihat, giving audiences the opportunity to hear from the director about making the film, his career and the journey from growing up in Edmonton to making an internationally recognised and prize-winning feature film.

Steve Foster, of Talkies Community Cinema, said: “We are delighted to welcome Serkan to Talkies. The fact that he is local to Enfield makes this a particularly special screening for us.

“Exodus is a powerful and moving film, and we’re looking forward to giving local audiences the chance to see it and then hear directly from the filmmaker about how it came to life.”

Talkies Community Cinema is a volunteer-led organisation that has been bringing independent, international and locally produced cinema to audiences in Enfield for more than 14 years. Its programme regularly features filmmaker Q&As and provides opportunities for audiences to engage directly with the people behind the films.

The screening is part of Talkies’ continuing commitment to showcasing independent filmmaking and supporting emerging and established filmmakers with “connections to the local community”.
