Enfield Choral Society chair Lesley Jordan on what audiences can look forward to this month and beyond
Enfield Choral Society’s forthcoming concert series is exciting and widely varied.
We will be singing ‘Songs from the Shows’ in our summer concert on Saturday, 18th June, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on 12th November and, of course, our Christmas concert on a date to be confirmed!
Our summer concert will be conducted by our musical director Mark Sproson and includes many well-known and popular songs from shows of the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s, including My Fair Lady, West Side Story, Chicago and Les Misérables.
As a tribute to the renowned composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, who died aged 91 in November 2021, we will also be featuring his music, including the classics Send in the Clowns from A Little Night Music and Comedy Tonight from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
The November concert is a collaboration with Enfield Chamber Orchestra, who have worked with us previously and invited us to help celebrate their 80th anniversary in style with a performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, conducted by their musical director Martin Smith.
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams’ birth, the November programme also includes the choral arrangement of his beautiful Serenade to Music, which Mark will conduct.
As for previous performances of major works to mark Enfield Choral Society’s own special anniversaries, we are looking to recruit additional singers for the Beethoven concert. Rehearsals of the choral movement Ode to Joy commence on the evening of Tuesday, 21st June in Enfield. Previous choral experience is a requirement. Since the music is challenging to sing, we plan to incorporate some vocal coaching into rehearsals. For further details and to take advantage of this opportunity, contact [email protected].
