A Winchmore Hill tennis club has launched a financial appeal to help replace two of its courts – including a unique fundraising event taking place next month.

On Saturday, 1st August from 12pm, Brackendale Lawn Tennis Club (LTC) is staging a “24-hour fancy dress tennis marathon”, with up to 50 players dressing as celebrity and film characters, complete with red carpet entrances, rivalries, top trumps-style player cards, ‘guess who?’ teasers and hourly themed challenges.

In homage to Wimbledon, the event will also be “fuelled” by strawberries and cream and Pimms.

Brackendale LTC has been running since 1933 and is described as a “welcoming, volunteer-led community hub that provides affordable tennis for all”.

The fancy dress event will raise money for Brackendale’s £80,000 court replacement appeal, helping to “ensure our courts remain accessible to players of all ages and ability, for future generations to come”.

Two of the club’s five courts have “reached the end of their life” and need replacing to avoid closure during wet weather and through the winter months.

Closure of courts during parts of the year limits the club’s opportunities for coaching, league matches, junior development and community participation, but if enough money is raised Brackendale’s appeal says it would “help ensure we can continue serving local residents and opening tennis up to more, for many years to come”.

The club adds: “Our objective is to have the right facilities and opportunities for players of all ages, to create an environment that allows everyone to be active in our community; whether it be existing or new members.”
