A pop-up exhibition celebrating the heritage of the Windrush generation is continuing its tour around the borough.

Following a successful showcase at Dugdale Arts Centre in Enfield Town, the Caribbean Front Room pop-up exhibition, curated by Enfield Black Heritage Hub, continued its borough-wide tour as part of a Windrush Day celebration in Pymmes Park at the end of last month.

The “immersive installation” recreates the heart of many Caribbean family homes in the 1960s and 70s, inviting visitors to “discover the stories, traditions and treasured objects that have connected generations”.

Inspired by authentic items from the home of a local Windrush resident, the exhibition combines heritage objects with interactive digital technology.

Visitors can scan QR codes placed throughout the room to unlock photographs, memories and oral histories behind everyday objects, from the glass fish displayed in the cabinet to the handmade crochet doily on the centre table.

The experience also connects to an online interactive map, allowing visitors to explore additional stories and discover how ordinary household treasures became powerful symbols of culture, identity and belonging.

Following its appearance at the Windrush Day celebration, the exhibition continues its borough-wide tour with a residency now underway at Edmonton Green Library for the rest of the summer, before it moves to Forty Hall during Black History Month, between October to November.

Dionne John, chair of Enfield Black Heritage Hub, said: “The Caribbean Front Room is more than an exhibition, it’s a living archive of memories, culture and heritage. By bringing together objects, personal stories and digital technology, we are creating new ways for younger generations to connect with the lived experiences of the Windrush Generation and preserve them for the future.”

Sarah Eckert, a trustee of the Rudolph Walker Foundation, said: “At the Rudolph Walker Foundation, we are immensely proud to champion initiatives that harness the power of storytelling to celebrate cultural heritage and ignite the potential of younger generations.”

Lois Brown, Founder of 2 Sweet Occasions, added: “We’re proud to work alongside local community partners, providing authentic
Caribbean culinary experiences that bring people together to celebrate the Windrush Generation in Enfield.”

Caribbean Front Room is an immersive cultural installation developed by Enfield Black Heritage Hub to preserve and share Windrush stories through storytelling, heritage objects and interactive digital experiences. The project encourages local
residents to contribute memories, photographs and oral histories, helping to build a growing archive that reflects the rich history and lasting legacy of Caribbean communities in Enfield.
